Inspirational Talk: Anthony Hüseyin, Moderation: Yeşim Duman / EN

Since performing at last year’s Pop-Kultur, non-binary singer-songwriter Anthony Hüseyin has accomplished a lot. They launched a new EP as part of »Project O« at Maxim Gorki Theater, which is where they also acted in the stage adaptation of Fatma Aydemir’s novel »Djinns,« singing in Turkish, English and Kurdish. Their next EP will be released this coming November.

Born in conservative Urfa and raised in Istanbul, Hüseyin gave up their Turkish passport to avoid joining the army and instead attained a master’s degree in jazz singing in the Netherlands. After the outbreak of the Gezi protests in 2013 is when Anthony Hüseyin first used music to confront the prevailing social and political injustices in Turkey. With melancholy and a jazzy flourish, their songs combine house, techno and nu-disco with Türk Sanat Müzigi (Turkish Art Music). In their creative output, Anthony Hüseyin pays homage to the pop star Zeki Müren, who lived an openly queer life, telling of their artistic and personal quest as a queer person. At this inspirational talk, we will discuss the experiences of starting out and surviving in the music industry.

Die/Der nicht-binäre*r Singer-Songwriter*in und Performer*in Anthony Hüseyin spielte bereits im letzten Jahr beim Pop-Kultur Festival live. Seitdem hat sich viel getan. Anthony Hüseyin feierte mit »Projekt O« die Veröffentlichung einer neuen EP im Maxim Gorki, spielt in dem Stück zu Fatma Aydemirs Roman »Dschinns« und singt dort auf Türkisch, Englisch und Kurdisch. Im November 2023 erscheint eine weitere EP.

Geboren im konservativen Urfa und aufgewachsen in Istanbul, gab Hüseyin den türkischen Pass auf, um nicht zur Armee zu müssen, und machte stattdessen einen Master im Jazzgesang in den Niederlanden. Nach dem Ausbruch der Gezi-Proteste 2013 setzte sich Anthony Hüseyin erstmals musikalisch mit den herrschenden sozialen und politischen Ungerechtigkeiten in der Türkei auseinander. Die Songs kombinieren House, Techno und Nu-Disco mit Türk Sanat Müzigi (Turkish Art Music), sind mal melancholisch, mal jazzig. Anthony Hüseyin huldigt in ihnen dem großen Popstar Zeki Müren, der offen queer gelebt hat, und erzählt von der künstlerischen und persönlichen Suche als queerer Mensch. Beim Inspirational Talk sprechen wir über die Erfahrungen vom Einstieg und Überleben in der Musikbranche.
